1960 Flxible Starliner - Rare Collectible Coach Converted to Motorhome
This 1960 Flxible Starliner is a rare opportunity to own a true piece of American motoring history. Professionally converted to a motorhome in 1970 and updated over the years, this iconic coach blends mid-century style, lasting craftsmanship, and the kind of story that makes vintage enthusiasts lean in for more.
The Flxible Starliner was among the most sought-after designs of its day--sleek, curvaceous, and engineered with the same durability that made Flxible a favorite for commercial and passenger service. Only about fifty of these buses were built in 1960, making them exceptionally scarce today. Adding to the allure, this particular coach is said to have begun its life at Folsom State Prison and, according to local lore, may have even transported Johnny Cash to one of his famous performances there. While that history can't be verified, it lends this coach a bit of mythic Americana that's impossible to ignore.
Powering the Starliner is a rebuilt Detroit Diesel 6-71 inline six-cylinder, two-stroke engine with a blower, paired to a six-speed Allison transmission. The engine starts easily with a push-button ignition and runs beautifully, easily cruising confidently at highway speeds of 65 to 70 mph.
Converted initially by professionals in the 1970s, it has been refreshed in recent years with a range of new amenities, including a refrigerator, air conditioner, stove with range hood, toilet, LED lighting, and a TV. A whimsical electric fireplace built into the dash adds an unexpected touch of charm and warmth, while new flooring gives the cabin a clean, updated feel.
The Flxible comfortably sleeps 6 between the sleeper sofa, dinette, and queen rear bed. Near the back bedroom is a large wardrobe closet and a full bathroom with a toilet, vanity, and step-down shower. A complete galley provides you with a double sink, 3 3-burner stove, an oven with an overhead fan, a microwave, and a full refrigerator and freezer. The layout provides a comfortable living space as it stands, yet still offers tremendous potential for someone who wants to take the restoration or customization further.
What makes this Starliner truly special is its versatility and collectibility. Whether you envision a period-correct restoration, a luxury retro-style RV conversion, or a vintage promotional vehicle, this Flxible provides the perfect canvas. Its lines are unmistakable,
